The nominees can be seen as representative of pretty much the full spectrum of commercially distributed contemporary indie\/Indiewood film.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Birdman-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-371\" src=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Birdman-poster-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Birdman poster\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Birdman-poster-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Birdman-poster.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fully \u00c2\u00a0half of the eight nominees for best picture are or were distributed by studio speciality divisions:\u00c2\u00a0<em>The Grand Budapest Hotel\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Birdman\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>for Fox Searchlight;\u00c2\u00a0<em>The Theory of Everything\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>for Focus Features;\u00c2\u00a0<em>Whiplash<\/em> for Sony Pictures Classics. Two more were distributed by established indie players, the relatively ambitious The Weinstein Company (seeking to handle very Indiewood type titles) with\u00c2\u00a0<em>The Imitation Game<\/em> and the smaller-scale oriented IFC with\u00c2\u00a0<em>Boyhood<\/em>. That left just two studio main division releases among the nominees, \u00c2\u00a0<em>American Sniper<\/em> from Warner and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em> from Paramount, although the latter is an independent production with subject matter of the kind that might often be associated with Indiewood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/theory-of-everything-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-372\" src=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/theory-of-everything-poster-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"theory of everything poster\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/theory-of-everything-poster-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/theory-of-everything-poster.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Overall, this is also a pretty typical bunch of candidates, although leaning towards the independent end of the spectrum a bit more than average &#8211; with the exception of the distinctly one-dimensional (and reactionary)\u00c2\u00a0<em>American Sniper<\/em>. Why that film could be rated as an example of &#8216;quality&#8217; even within the studio context is something of a mystery to me (I&#8217;d struggle to find any way to include it on the basis of any of its textual qualities in the notions of &#8216;quality&#8217; I&#8217;ve explored in my new book <em>Quality Hollywood: Markers of Distinction in Contemporary Studio Film<\/em>, which is due out in the Autumn).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Otherwise, we have an obligatory dose of solid historical-biopic-worthy drama (as so often, with the quality patina of British historical settings), plus the similarly historical-worthy territory of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em>. Then a dash of\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0mid-market Indiewood titles and the two remaining indies, one more distinctly original in conception than usual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Boyhood-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-373\" src=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Boyhood-poster-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Boyhood poster\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Boyhood-poster-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/gkindiefilm.com\/wp-content\/upLoads\/2015\/01\/Boyhood-poster.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What might we conclude from this? That not much changes here very greatly from year to year, despite some shifts of emphasis.
